Two custom built computers running live generated animations, with mineral oil seeping through them. The animations change in relation to the presence of an alien audience, presenting paranoid representations of a panoptic network and a deranged projection of the emotionally burnt-out collective psyche that exists within it. Bad Data Set developed out of an interest in plastics and other mineral-based materials, on which so many technologies rely, and their beginnings as living organisms on a prehistoric earth. Primordial urges of long-dead creatures seep into the network that is built from them. Signs and symbols from Christopher’s own life as a 24-hours-on precarious labourer feature; the advert on the commute that reads, 'tired of being tired?’; f20 printed on Fluoxetine (Prozac) capsules; a forever-awake lucky cat at a market near his workplace. Plugged in to multiple realities through smart devices we find ourselves increasingly disengaged from all of them. We become less and less like people and more like jellyfish, floating in nothing with no brain, only a decentralised nervous system; no thought and all input. Bad Data Set explores how, through our 24hr emotional labour for it, the global network is becoming more like us as we become less and less like ourselves.
